Understanding liquidity, volume, and spread

Liquidity explains why two stocks with the same performance can offer very different trading experiences.

Liquidity is the ease of trading a stock without moving its price too much. It depends on volume, traded value, orders, and depth.

Volume counts shares, while traded value measures money exchanged. Traded value often compares stocks better.

The spread is the difference between best bid and best ask. Wider spreads increase the implicit cost of trading.

Large moves should be checked against volume. A big move on thin flow can be less informative.

Liquid stocks allow more flexibility. Illiquid stocks often require smaller positions and longer horizons.
